2014 New Years Diablo ride, year end mileage

Tricia at 1000 feet Diablo New Year 2014_0496

Tricia and I didn't ride Diablo on New Years Day, as is tradition. We'd come home from Washington DC the night before and between the time change and dehydration of the plane ride we were just too toasted. So we went Jan 2, 2014. That still counts, right?

It was a stunningly beautiful day, with near record warmth and no fog. We launched from the Arbolado Park and grunted our way (well, I grunted, Tricia looked just fine) up the North Gate to the junction.

Zeke Diablo New Year 2014_0520There we met a a few other riders, one of which was Zeke, who had started from the Castro Valley BART station and climbed up South Gate on his way to the summit. Not a bad ride, but perhaps a bit more impressive considering he's doing it solo and is 12 years old.

As rode with him up to the summit I almost felt guilty. I'm on my carbon Roubaix and he's on a bike with front shocks, a rack and a pannier. Having ridden up on my commuter bike with fenders, racks and panniers I know what a difference all the weight makes, and it must make even more percentage wise for a light rider like him. But I said almost guilty. I'm not giving up the Roubaix.

Edit: I just found this great story on him. He's even more cool than I realized.

  1. Damn you can frame a shot!

Any chance Zeke is looking for a gf? My daughter's bf is a little too emo.

  2. I don't know about the GF part, but this guy rocks. He rode from SoCal to... was it Portland or Seattle...this summer. Self supported touring. I am impressed! Plus he's just cool.
